You know by now how passionate I am about photography, but also for learning. Creativity is a constant personal evolution. Photography is a skill that needs to be practiced. When both elements come together in a training course led by two industry trailblazers, that’s not to be missed as far as I am concerned! I’d probably go even further too, and say that in an industry that’s as fast paced and over populated as ours, if you don’t regularly ‘top-up’ your knowledge bank, you are going to get left behind.
So I was absolutely delighted to meet and work with two of my favourite photographers; Anja McDonald and Amy McDaniel from Dewdrops Photography.
Over the course of two jam-packed days, we covered EVERYTHING from lighting, set design, newborn handling, safety and posing, maternity styling and posing, outdoor family and maternity sessions, lens selection, camera settings, marketing, and editing. The list was endless, and my brain certainly felt it by the end!
The aim for me when attending workshops, is never to replicate what another newborn photographer is doing (that is their style and they own it for sure!), but to be inspired, re-invigorated and to pick up on the subtle tips that are shared along the way, which almost always help to speed up my workflow or improve my business.
Amy’s perfectionism when it came to her very particular posing methods was awe inspiring, and I can say 100%, that if I had a newborn baby and lived in Alabama, USA, I know who my newborn photographer would be! (She is also very funny and a beer drinker, so a girl after my own heart).
What Anja doesn’t know about editing and shooting for compression, is not worth knowing. I’m not going to share the many pearls of wisdom I learnt during her editing segment, but I now use several of her techniques every.single.day. Game changer! (Also, one of my favourite things about Anja is how her accent changes depending upon who she is speaking to! If you ever meet her, ask about her special German accent 😉 )
All-in-all, I had a brilliant couple of days filled with beautiful newborn babies, baby bumps, new mums and dads, funny kids and their families, amazing photography, good company, lots of laughter and some pretty gorgeous photographs to remember it all by!
Here are a few of my favourite bump and baby photos take over the two day course:
